They were brought down when the Mad King's insanity became too dangerous to be ignored. With the might of her fledgling dragons and the devotion of her khalasar, Daenerys marched her army through Essos, sacking cities and freeing slaves. Upon purchasing a slave army known as the Unsullied, she slew their former master and freed them from bondage. Inspired by her mercy and cleverness, many of the Unsullied choose to fight for her. With their legendary skill at her back, Daenerys conquered the cities of Slaver's Bay, including the city of Meereen. Ruling these cities, however, proved to be more difficult than freeing them.
A series of uprisings
At the end of the war Daemon and his two eldest sons were dead, and his younger sons and Bittersteel had been forced into exile. Daeron II went on to rule for another fifteen years as Daeron the Good King, bringing peace and prosperity back to the realm. He married his sister Alyssane, which is not great for obvious reasons, but apparently the two were actually in love. They were both supposed to marry suitors outside the family but eloped together instead. He built roads and sewage infrastructure—all the things a king does when he’s not busy burning people to a crisp with his dragons.
Cast
Yes, the series is a prequel with Ryan J. Condal (Rampage and Hercules) and Miguel Sapohnik (whom you may remember from Game of Thrones favorite episodes “Battle of the Bastards,”“Hardhome,” and more) at the helm. Author George R.R. Martin is also actively involved as an executive producer. Alicent is a tricky figure; she alternately tries to make peace with Rhaenyra and avoid conflict while strategizing ways to put Aegon on the throne. Rumors abound that she poisoned her own husband, the king, in order to hasten his demise and crown Aegon while Rhaenyra’s back was effectively turned. Laena and Laenor have limited choices in their roles as heirs to the mighty House Velaryon. They each wind up marrying into the Targaryen dynasty — Laenor forms a marriage of convenience with Rhaenyra that allows him to live freely as a gay man under her protection while she pursues her love affair with Harwin Strong.
Viserys Targaryen
Though he was killed, his sons and their descendants would carry on the fight in new wars for nearly 60 years. The Blackfyre Rebellions only ended when the last of the Blackfyre males was killed during the War of the Ninepenny Kings. The Targaryens are one of the last surviving noble families of Old Valyria.
Season one opens with King Viserys struggling to name a successor for his seat on the Iron Throne. He didn’t have a male heir in line nor was he willing to hand the reigns over to his volatile brother, Daemon. After much deliberation, Viserys finally chose his daughter Rhaenyra in a desperate bid to keep the Targaryen rule intact.

Daemon is congenial but aggressive, and he has a bad habit of killing all his potential love rivals. He falls for Rhaenys’s daughter Laena Velaryon — a convenient match in terms of maintaining his place at court — but Laena’s already engaged. Middle child Luke makes up in ferocity and grit what he lacks in age.

Surviving heirs Viserys and Daenerys fled into exile across the narrow sea. Princess Rhaenys is named after her great-great-grandmother, Queen Rhaenys Targaryen, the younger sister and wife of King Aegon I (who was also married to his older sister Visenya). Despite Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) having been the official heir for years, the Green Council concludes with the coronation of King Aegon II. In House of the Dragon, all of these characters have been aged up significantly except for Alicent, who is still 18-ish. This makes her much closer in age to Rhaenyra — much more of a peer than a stepmother twice her age.
Aegon's Conquest and Faith Militant uprising
Aegon perished in a fire at Summerhall, the Targaryen summer home. Joffrey’s complex family history, as well as his being at the very center of the nation’s civil war alongside his two older brothers, seems to have taken its toll. He grows up reckless and determined to prove himself worthy of their bravery and courage, despite being far too young for fighting.
More Must-Reads From TIME
Jaehaerys and Alyssane had 13 children together, but for the sake of simplicity we’ll just talk about the few who were vying for the throne. In the first season of House of the Dragon, we were introduced to a large number of well-born, opulently dressed, silver-blonde people with dragons and chips on their shoulders. We learned how the relationship between Rheanyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, once the best of friends, degraded over time as each became convinced that the other would block their path to the Iron Throne. We saw how they passed this prejudice onto their children, who grew up hating each other. We saw how Daemon Targaryen coveted the Iron Throne occupied by his brother Viserys from afar, which might have been part of the reason he married Viserys' daughter Rhaenyra, Daemon's own niece, so he could be closer to it.
Although both Drogon and Rhaegal survived, they were injured during the battle against the dead. After the Great War, Targaryen forces still maintained roughly a dozen ships in the royal fleet and a contingent of Unsullied forces. After Euron shot down and killed Rhaegal with scorpion bolts, Drogon became Daenerys’s only living dragon. After burning the Dothraki khals in Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys emerges unburnt from the flames, and all the people in the city bow down to her.
Aegon's own immense charisma and military acumen overcame this issue, but when he died and his son Aenys, born of incest, took the throne there was widespread condemnation. The Faith Militant launched a bloody uprising that Aenys was unable to deal with. He appointed his half-brother Maegor to the position of Hand of the King in an attempt to put down the revolt, but Maegor's heavy-handed tactics saw a bloodbath result and he became known as 'The Cruel'. When Aenys died and Maegor took the throne, the situation worsened.
During her lifetime, she was first married to Laenor Velaryon and had three children with him, and later marries her uncle, Prince Daemon, with whom she shares three kids. After a decade, Aerys had become more sullen and moody, and unhappy that much of the credit for the running of the realm had gone to his hand. When Lord Denys Darklyn of Duskendale refused to pay his taxes, Aerys attempted to sort the situation out personally. Instead, in what became known as the Defiance of Duskendale, he ended up imprisoned in the town for six months before Tywin was finally able to break him out. Freed, Aerys' rage was terrible to behold as he had the entire Darklyn family utterly destroyed, its surviving members put to death through horrendous and inventive methods.
Though more dragons were born, conflicts within House Targaryen led to a Civil War, the Dance of the Dragons, which caused their extinction. Before their deaths, the dragons of House Targaryen stayed in the Dragonpit of King’s Landing. During his rule Westeros remained at peace, and the threat from the Blackfyre Pretenders was apparently ended once and for all when Maelys the Monstrous was killed in the War of the Ninepenny Kings. Despite the prosperity of this time, Aegon was convinced that the last three surviving dragon eggs could still be hatched and devoted much time to studying them.
